MEET DANIEL: CERTIFICATE III STUDENT WITH CWBTS

“You’ve got to think of the end reward: when you get signed-off, you get qualified, you earn good money. You’ve got that certificate for life.”

We recently caught up with Daniel, who’s currently completing his Certificate III as an apprenticeship in Murwillimbah, NSW. Daniel works full time framing for Malcolm Graffin Building, and his trainer checks in with him on the job. To read about how it all works for a full time apprentice, scroll through the pictures below. Cheers Daniel!

Name: Daniel Phillips
Training: Currently completing a CPC30211 Certificate III in Carpentry with City-Wide Building and Training Services (CWBTS), delivered via workplace training
Employer: Malcolm Graffin Building, Murwillimbah, NSW

“I was originally working at the truss yard at Williams. Mal needed a few workers so I came over and started building frames. The certificate III was part of me coming over to work. Mal offered it to me. I had already completed an apprenticeship as a butcher but I have a young daughter so I came into the industry because of the bump-up in pay.”

“I clock-in at six o’clock in the morning, earlier if we have to do. We usually have a few people on table — three or four guys to tables every day smashing-out frames, plus different kinds of stuff like sanding hardwood and preparation work. We also build different things: we built that donga [transportable building] and we build chairs.”

“Day-to-day we do a lot of framing. That’s the majority of what we do.

“I love it. It’s good. Malcolm’s a great boss. It has opened up a lot of opportunities.”

“The training’s all on-the-job. I do 40 hours a week. The training guy, Josh, comes down here. Mal and Josh have their meetings and then Josh comes over with me and does tests, homework, whatever I’ve got to do. There’s three booklets over the three years. There’s ten or twelve modules in each one of those books — they are all different units of building. I do all that at home.”

“I find it really interesting, building something from start to finish. You get a sense of achievement. It’s great.”

“When you’re starting off you’re at the lower level and you’re doing lower end jobs you’ve got to think of the end reward: when you get signed-off, you get qualified, you earn good money. You’ve got that certificate for life.”

Legend! Thanks Daniel.
